Managing Kochia on Marginal Cropland – Information for Producers

Herbicide‑resistant kochia continues to be a growing challenge across Saskatchewan, particularly on saline and low‑producing acres.

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is offering its Marginal Areas Program (MAP) to help producers convert difficult or unproductive annual cropland into perennial forage. According to DUC, this approach may help reduce weed pressure, improve soil health, and create forage or haying opportunities on areas that are costly to farm.

DUC advises that program incentives of up to approximately $400 per acre may be available, depending on eligibility and site conditions. Custom forage seeding and technical support from DUC agrologists may also be included.

The RM of Hoodoo No. 401 is sharing this information for awareness only. Participation is voluntary, and all program details, eligibility, and agreements are handled directly between the producer and Ducks Unlimited Canada.

For more information, producers are encouraged to contact DUC directly or review the posted program material.

FIRE BAN HAS BEEN REMOVED

The local area has received sufficient moisture to remove the fire ban. However, we still recommend that all individuals wanting to burn utilize smart burning practices. These include:

  • Use a screen on your firepit
  • Extinguish your fire at night
  • If you are planning a controlled burn, please call the controlled burn line at 1-866-404-4911
  • Have a water supply nearby
